7 completely wonderful ways to waste time at work

Posted by: mark on March 21, 2010

You are at work and not excited.  Like everyone else in the office today, there are other things you would rather be doing, and none of them would really be helpful to your employer in any way.  But these other things would be more fun than typing an email to some person who probably will not even read it, or filling out some form, or calling someone, or whatever it is that you have to do that day.  Sure, you could try to stay focused, but sometimes you just need to get away for a little while.  It is not your fault – you are only human after all.

We at icebluebanana.com put almost no effort into this and decided on five three criteria for ranking a proper waste of time during working hours, and we feel that we have come up with a pretty good list of life saving distractions for you.

  1. Will it keep you more entertained than talking to your neighbors?
  2. Can you hide it from others?
  3. Can you do this every day without getting bored?

And, lets face it.  Your neighbors suck, and who cares if you can hide this stuff from them.  All we really need to know here is if these will keep you entertained.  So, without further ado, here is our list of the top 10 ways to avoid burnout at work (or, ways to just avoid work).

Internet research

Possibly the reason you are here now, this has become the great American past time before,  during, and after lunch.  Want to know about current events?  Go to CNN or FOX.  Want to know about tech news?  Go to CNET.  Want to see highlights according to a whole bunch of independent people?  Try digg.  Want to read news that is similar to CNN and FOX but not quite as real?  The Onion has you covered.  Those don’t work?  Go to youtube or funnyordie.  Some days, for me life begins and ends on these sites.

Physical movement to increase strength and stamina

Hand held devices and phones are great tools to increase business productivity. The PSP in particular is a device that will make you more efficient, and help your hand-eye coordination.  Plus, this device is really easy to hide under your desk while listening to your boss complain about your lack of motivation.

Note:  If you do not want to spend the cash for a hand held device, freebies.about.com has a page filled with games you can play on you computer at any time.  These are very good for reducing stress and providing happiness in the workplace.

Help coworkers stay alert

Sometimes, all that you need to do to tell someone you care is to whack them in the back of the head.

Increasing your knowledge of pretend things

Fantasy is a literary genre that has seen some success in the past five years.  Not a single book or series has captured my interest like an as yet unfinished seven book series, George R. R. Martin’s incredible, if somewhat depressing, fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.  This series has inspired video games, youtube videos by fans, lots of complaining, and an upcoming HBO series.

Charity and fundraising

There are many ways we can help our fellow humans.  One of them is by playing online games.  Never mind how that is possible.  We did not ask Jesus how he turned water into wine, so lets not push this too far either.  A few of them are:

  1. helpthirst.com,
  2. freepoverty.com,
  3. charitii.com,
  4. freeflour.com,
  5. freerice.com, and
  6. clickforachange.com

Improving morale

Do anything you see in this video.

Get ready to go home

Not much to say about this one.  Call someone and have a 15 minutes conversation to tell them you are leaving in 15 minutes.  Then go home.

Have a good evening!
